There are several Internet and telephone line providers in Spain. However, there are not so many of them, so due to the actual lack of competition, the Internet in Spain is one of the most expensive in Europe.

In Spain, you cannot buy internet from one provider and a home phone line from another. You can buy only a telephone line, but you cannot buy Internet separately without a telephone. Only some local ISPs provide this option. Many Spaniards buy their mobile phone, home phone line and internet from the same provider. Usually, it is cheaper, because companies provide discounts in this case.

How to connect the Internet and a home phone in Spain

The main condition for connecting the Internet and a home telephone line in Spain is the presence of a residence permit in Spain. The second mandatory condition is the presence of an account in one of the Spanish banks, from which the provider automatically debits the monthly fee. The contract with the provider can be concluded in the company’s office, by phone or even online. It all depends on the company.

A number of companies draw up a contract for connecting the Internet and a home phone in the presence of an NDE and a foreign passport. First of all, this is the Orange company, as well as the Movistar company (below you will find a description of the company). It is better to contact the company’s offices directly, because When connecting by phone, problems and misunderstandings may occur.

If you have purchased real estate in Spain and you are not going to get a residence permit, then the only way to connect the Internet at home is to buy “prepago” Internet flash drives. In this case, you pay a certain amount in advance, for which you have the right to download a certain amount of information. Of course, the speed of such Internet is much lower, but it is enough to read e-mail or have Skype conversations.

When connecting the Internet and a home telephone line in Spain, we recommend that you take an interest in promotions and discounts. Especially during the extension of the contract. Sometimes, only after the client says that he is going to another provider, they begin to offer him more favorable conditions. It is worth bearing in mind that if you do decide to switch and have already signed a contract with a new provider, you have a few days to cancel the contract. However, in this case, the new provider may impose fines for refusing the concluded agreement.

In most cases, contracts have a mandatory validity period of at least 12 months. If you want to change provider earlier, penalties are inevitable. If you also buy a mobile phone, the mandatory term of the contract can be extended to 18 months. WARNING! These 18 months can start counting from the moment of purchasing a SIM card, and not from the conclusion of the initial Internet connection contract. Always clarify all conditions in advance.

Companies on the Internet services market in Spain

Movistar

Movistar is a commercial brand of the Spanish multinational company Telefonica, which operates in Spain and Latin America. In Spain, two companies operate under the Movistar brand: “Telefonica Moviles España, SAU” (mobile phones) and “Telefonica de España, SA” (home phone and Internet). Legally, these are two different companies, but for customers it is the Movistar brand. Until May 2010, the Movistar trademark was used only for mobile phones. The home telephone line and the Internet were installed under the Telefónica brand. Since 2010, Movistar has become the sole brand of the company.

Telefonica was the first company to offer home internet in Spain. For quite a long time, this company was virtually a monopoly on the Spanish market. Such a situation contradicted European legislation in the field of competition development and anti-monopolies. Therefore, the company was obliged to provide its cable Internet and telephone lines to other companies (for rent at a price set by the state). In this way, the appearance of competition on the Internet market in Spain is created, although in fact it is almost non-existent.

Vodafone

Vodafone is one of the largest Internet and telephone providers in Europe. This English company ranks second in the number of clients in Spain.

Vodafone Spain is one of the four main subsidiaries of the Vodafone group. In the European market, Vodafone is the leader, in Spain it ranks second after Movistar. In 2007, Vodafone acquired Tele2 España and thus began to offer comprehensive services in the field of telecommunications (mobile communication, home telephony and Internet). In April 2014, Vodafone acquired the provider company Ono for 7,200 million euros. The agreement passed the mandatory approval of the European Commission.

orange

Orange is a fixed and mobile telephony operator in Spain, a subsidiary of the French multinational telecommunications company Orange SA. The Orange brand appeared in 2006, after the merger of all brands into Orange, as well as the joining of the fixed telephony and Internet operator “Wanadoo” (formerly “Uni2”) and the mobile operator Amena.

Jazztel

Jazztel is a holding company in the telecommunications sector. Despite being headquartered in England, the company only operates in the Spanish market. The company is popular because offers internet and phone lines at lower prices than Movistar and Vodafone.
