How to rent a car in Montenegro
A prerequisite for renting a car in Montenegro is the driver’s age: from 21 years old and having an international driving license. It is necessary to leave a deposit of 150-300 €, depending on the class of car.
Rental prices
The rental price depends on the season: in the summer months, a car rental per day costs from 35 € . Please note that there are many people interested, it is better to book a car online in advance. The cost of gasoline is 1-1.5 € per liter, gas 0.7 € per liter.
Scooters can be rented at rental points at all resorts. Required condition: availability of an international driving license or subcategory “M”. Cost from 20€ per day . If you plan to travel with a scooter to neighboring countries, check this opportunity at the rental office.
Driving rules and fines
In Montenegro, standard driving rules apply: it is strictly forbidden to drive while intoxicated, driving without a seatbelt, and talking on the phone while driving – a fine of 50 €. Be sure to drive with the headlights on and obey the speed limit:
- in a populated area – 50 km/h
- outside the populated area – 80 km/h
- on the road – 100 km/h
- on the motorway – 130 km/h
For speeding, a fine of 30 €.
There is also a restriction on mountain roads; it is recommended to drive at a speed of up to 50 km/h and carefully follow the road signs. There are mountain tunnels on the serpentines ; drivers are warned of their approach by a sign with a black dot.
Montenegrin police zealously enforce driving rules. An incorrectly parked car will be taken to the impound lot after 10 minutes; to return it you need to pay 150 €.
