Fines for exceeding the maximum speed limit are not among the lowest in the Netherlands. So it is worth being careful not to press the gas pedal too hard…
The “old” fine schedule will still apply in the Netherlands until the end of February 2024. The new one is to come into force on 1 March and for many offences it assumes an increase in fines of around 10%.
Below you will find information on speeding fines under both the old and new tariffs.
Attention! The Dutch police and prosecutors apply the principle of “measuring correction” to the driver’s advantage when issuing speeding tickets – we read on the prosecutor’s website. It is 3 km/h for speeds up to 100 km/h and 3% for speeds above 100 km/h.
Example: If the measurement shows that in a place where the speed limit is, for example, 50 km/h, the driver was driving at 70 km/h, he should pay a fine for exceeding the speed limit by 17 km/h (and not 20 km/h).
Note! If, after taking into account the measurement correction, the speed limit is less than 4 km/h, no ticket is issued. Therefore, there are no tickets for exceeding the maximum permitted speed by 1, 2 or 3 km/h.
Example: A driver was driving at 76 km/h in a place where the speed limit was 70 km/h. After taking into account the 3 km/h correction of the measurement, it turns out that he exceeded the speed limit by only 3 km/h. This is less than 4 km/h, so there will be no ticket.
However, if the same driver had been measured at 77 km/h in the same place, he would have already been issued a ticket. After taking into account the measurement correction, it would turn out that he exceeded the speed limit by 4 km/h.
To all the fine amounts given below you need to add 9 euros for administrative costs .
The amount of selected fines for exceeding the maximum permitted speed in built-up areas until the end of February 2024 :

-72 euros (10 km/h)
-136 euros (15 km/h)

Exceeding the maximum speed limit by more than 30 km/h in a built-up or unbuilt area (or 40 km/h on a motorway) means contact with the prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor can impose a high fine on the driver or, for example, temporarily take away their driving license. Much depends on the scale of the offense and whether the driver has previously been punished for exceeding the maximum speed limit by such a large amount.
A new fine schedule is to be in force from March 2024. However, it still has to be finally approved and officially published. The planned new amounts were published, among others, by the portal of the drivers’ organization ANWB.
