There are not many ancient monuments in the city, but all of them impress – either with their history or architecture. Besides, you can visit them for free.

Calais fortress

The Vikings brought the Kale fortress into this form in the 11th century, and then it was actively used by the Serbs, Turks, Austro-Hungarians and Yugoslavs. The fortress rises in the very center of the capital, and the view of the city from it, according to the presenter, is simply fantastic.

Stone bridge

The Romans built the bridge fifteen thousand years ago, and it consists of solid stone blocks. In 1944, the bridge was mined by the Germans, but after the explosion it stood. As the host of “Orla&Reshki. Girls” says, once the bridge was also used for public executions.

Picture gallery in the former bathhouse

The third ancient attraction of Skopje – the hammam – came to the city from the Turks, explains Nastya Ivleeva. The premises in a beautiful oriental style were planned to be opened as a hammam, but now there is an art gallery. The fact is that the daughter of the Ottoman ruler, who built the bathhouse, decided to test it before opening. But there she was bitten by a snake, and the girl died. The grief-stricken ruler forbade bathing in the hammam and ordered it to be closed forever.

The main train station

As the host of the travel show said, there are no other ancient monuments left in Skopje. The fact is that in 1963, a terrible earthquake passed through the city, which destroyed almost everything. The Macedonians restored the capital and built new monuments. The only thing that was not touched was the premises of the main station, it was left as a sad memory. There is still a clock that stopped just at the moment when the earthquake happened.
